Questions

What applicants ask us most

Here you will find straightforward answers to common questions about studying, applying, and receiving salon services at Kesho College. If you need further assistance, our admissions office is open Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 17:30.

Do I need previous experience to apply?

No previous hairdressing, barbering, or beauty experience is needed to apply for any of our diploma or certificate programmes. We teach every discipline from the absolute beginning, starting with basic scissor control, sectioning angles, comb posture, and tool hygiene. Our structured training method demonstrates every skill clearly before you practice on mannequin blocks, allowing complete beginners to build confidence gradually. What matters most during our admissions process is your willingness to listen, your dedication to deliberate daily practice, and your enthusiasm for learning a manual craft alongside working professionals.

What does the four-step admissions process involve?

Our admissions process consists of four simple steps designed to help us understand your potential. First, you attend an open morning on the first Saturday of any month at 10:00 to see our facilities. Second, you take part in a one-hour practical trial session, where tutors observe your hand dexterity and ability to follow basic technical demonstrations. Third, you complete an individual interview with Clara Weiss to discuss course demands and your personal commitments. Fourth, upon receiving an offer, you pay a €300 deposit to secure your place in a cohort capped at 14 students.

What equipment is included in the course kit?

Students enrolled in the Hairdressing Diploma and Barbering Certificate purchase a mandatory professional kit for €420 upon acceptance. This comprehensive kit includes cutting shears, texturising scissors, sectioning clips, carbon tail combs, cutting combs, professional round and paddle brushes, a salon-grade blow-dryer, and high-density training mannequin heads. Barbering kits also contain professional clippers, detailers, and guard attachments. All tools are commercial grade, ensuring that the equipment you use during training is identical to the tools you will carry forward into your professional salon junior career.

How are tuition fees structured and paid?

Tuition fees vary by programme: €8,400 for the 12-month Hairdressing Diploma, €4,600 for the 6-month Barbering Certificate, €3,200 for the 4-month Makeup Artistry Certificate, €2,400 for the 3-month Nail Technology Certificate, €1,350 for the 10-week Evening Colour Course, and €95 for the 1-day Taster Saturday. To support our learners, tuition for diploma and certificate programmes can be paid across three equal instalments during the course of study. A €300 deposit is required upon offer acceptance, which is credited toward your first tuition instalment.

What are the daily hours and weekly schedule?

Full-time classes run Monday to Friday from 08:45 to 17:00, comprising thirty hours of practical instruction each week. The day begins at 08:45 with salon floor set-up, followed by live tutor demonstrations at 09:00 and mannequin bench practice from 10:15 until the 12:30 lunch break. From 13:30 to 16:15, students work on live clients in our Student Salon under tutor supervision, concluding with group critique and floor clean-down by 17:00. Part-time and evening courses follow their own dedicated schedules, such as our Tuesday and Thursday evening colour sessions.

How does practical training work on the salon floor?

Practical floor training bridges the gap between practice mannequins and commercial client appointments. Trainees only enter the Student Salon after mastering foundational cutting and chemical application on mannequins and passing internal practical checkpoints. When working on public clients, instructors maintain a strict 1:7 supervision ratio. A tutor is present at your chair during the initial consultation, checks hair sectioning before cutting begins, monitors product formulation, and conducts a thorough final review before the client leaves. This constant supervision ensures client satisfaction while building student self-assurance.

Can members of the public book appointments at the Student Salon?

Yes, our Student Salon is open to the public Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 to 16:00 at 14 Harbour Lane in Lindmoor. Local clients can book haircuts with blow-dry finishes for €18, chemical colour services starting from €35, and classic beard trims for €10. All appointments are carried out by supervised students with tutor guidance at every stage. Because our trainees work thoroughly and check each step with instructors, clients should expect treatments to take somewhat longer than standard high-street salon appointments.

What support is provided for finding work after graduation?

While Kesho College does not make employment promises or job placement pledges, we provide dedicated professional preparation throughout the final term of your programme. Our business basics curriculum covers client consultation standards, portfolio curation, resume writing, and salon interview preparation. Head of cutting Theo Marchetti and principal Amara Lindqvist offer direct career guidance and candid portfolio critiques. Thanks to our thirty-hour weekly schedule and commercial salon floor experience, graduates enter the industry with strong manual discipline and practical competence, helping them secure junior stylist and assistant positions across independent neighbourhood salons.
