The day

A day on the floor

Training at Kesho College runs Monday to Friday from 08:45 to 17:00, mirroring the daily rhythms and operational pressures of a working commercial salon. Our day-schedule balances morning tutor demonstrations, mannequin bench practice, and afternoon client service.

Morning Schedule: 08:45 to 12:30

The training floor opens promptly at 08:45 for equipment set-up, mirror cleaning, and daily workstation preparation. At 09:00, lead instructors deliver a 75-minute live technical demonstration, breaking down specific cutting geometries, foil patterns, or skin fades while answering student questions.

At 10:15, students move to their assigned stations for deliberate block practice on mannequins, repeating the demonstrated technique under immediate instructor feedback and posture correction. Mannequin practice continues until 12:30, when all cutting tools are disinfected, surfaces are wiped down, and students take a one-hour lunch break to rest before the public salon opens.

02

Afternoon Schedule: 13:30 to 17:00

At 13:30, the Student Salon opens to the public, welcoming local clients for booked cuts, colours, and grooming treatments. Trainees run thorough consultations, formulate shades, and perform cuts under our strict 1:7 instructor supervision ratio, with mentors checking every perimeter line and colour balance before the client departs.

At 16:15, appointments conclude and students gather for group critique, reviewing finished mannequin heads, analysing technical triumphs, and discussing client communication challenges encountered during the afternoon. The day finishes with complete floor swept, towels laundered, and tools sterilised, closing the building at 17:00.

Dress Code and Equipment Requirements

Professional salon discipline begins with personal presentation and tool care. All Kesho College students must wear plain, clean, all-black clothing without prominent brand logos, accompanied by supportive, fully closed-toe footwear suitable for eight hours of floor standing.

Students are responsible for bringing their college-issued tool kit to every session, including shears, clippers, sectioning clips, combs, and brushes. Cleanliness is paramount: blades must be oiled daily, guards sanitised between uses, and combs submerged in sterilising solution. Developing this daily personal care and equipment readiness ensures seamless integration into professional salon environments after graduation.
