ABOUT

about the clinic

HODOKI

We untie the knot first, then build strength.

Hodoki Clinic has been on the second floor at 41 Alder Street, Fernhill, since 2015. Clara Mendes opened one clinic: five treatment bays and a small exercise studio. The name hodoki means untying. We look for what is held — a shoulder parked by the ear, a back that braced through a long sit — and we ease that before we ask it to work harder.

A first visit is 60 minutes and costs $95. We take a history, test how you move, and start hands-on treatment the same day. A written plan is sent that day. Follow-ups are every one to two weeks with a home programme, and we review at week six.

The two groups we planned for are desk workers and people after surgery. Neck, shoulder, back, wrist, hip, and knee each have a named therapist. Elena Duarte, clinic coordinator, looks after bookings and receipts for insurers.

the problem

Most of it starts at a desk, or after an operation.

Desk neck and shoulders. Hours at a laptop draw the head forward and lift the shoulders. The ache gathers at the base of the neck and between the shoulder blades, often late in the day. Clara Mendes treats neck and shoulder. Jonah Reed treats hand, wrist, and elbow when the keyboard is involved. Amara Osei treats desk-related back pain.

Sitting back. A long sit can leave the lower back stiff. Standing up from the chair is the hard moment, and the same stiffness is there the next morning. We test how you bend and sit before we treat, then set a few movements for the hours between meetings. Noor, 41, worked on this with eight weeks of Desk Reset and three follow-ups with Amara.

After surgery. A replaced knee, hip, or shoulder, or a repaired ligament, follows the surgeon’s protocol. Early on the joint is protected. Later it has to take the stairs and a full day up. Tomasz Wolski leads knee and hip rehabilitation. Priya Nair treats the shoulder after surgery. A post-surgery session is 60 minutes and costs $90.

AND MOVE AGAIN.

how we work

The method is simple to say and careful in the room. We assess how you move, loosen what is guarding, then strengthen what has to carry you through a desk day or a flight of stairs. Nothing is loaded until we know what it can do.

our method

Assess, loosen, strengthen.

#01

Assess

We start with your history and a clear look at how you move. Range, strength, and the way you sit or walk are noted before treatment begins.

#02

Loosen

Hands-on work comes next, for tissue that has been bracing. Neck, shoulder, and back are the usual places after a long desk day.

#03

Strengthen

Strength comes last, once the joint can move without bracing. In the studio that may be a supported squat, a band, or Desk Reset with Sofia Lindgren.

one recovered case

Lena went back to full days at her desk.

Lena, 34, is a software tester. Shoulder and neck ache had come on after long days at her desk. Over eight weeks she had six sessions, and a workstation review to look at how her desk was set.

This is a consented composite, told with her first name only, and it describes her own course of care. Her ache eased, her desk now suits her, and she knows which movements to repeat on a long afternoon.

Who you will see.

Clara Mendes founded Hodoki Clinic in 2015 and is still clinical lead. She is the physiotherapist for neck and shoulder problems, including the ache that builds across a desk week. She treats in the same five bays as the rest of the team. A first visit with her is 60 minutes: history, movement tests, treatment, and a written plan the same day.
