A diagnostic ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation, to look at the tendons and bursa of one joint. At Hone it costs $160 and is done on site during your visit when the clinician thinks it will help.
What you will do
You sit or lie comfortably while a gel is applied and a small probe moves over the shoulder. The clinician may ask you to lift or rotate the arm so they can see the tendons move.
What it can show
It can show a rotator cuff tear, a thickened tendon, fluid in the bursa or calcium deposits. It cannot see everything: sometimes an X-ray ($85, 2 views) or an MRI is the better test.
You will leave with the findings explained, and a plan that fits them.
