Step-ups: the exercise behind most knee plans

If you have ever had a knee plan from a physiotherapist, there is a good chance it included a step-up. It is simple, needs almost no equipment and trains the thigh, hip and balance together.

Choosing the box

Start with a step that is low enough to climb without pain, usually 10 to 15 centimetres. Stand tall, step up with one leg, lower slowly and keep the knee in line with the second toe.

How many

Most people begin with two sets of eight to ten on each side, a few times a week, and add height or a light weight when it feels easy. Your physiotherapist will adjust this for your own knee.

If the exercise causes sharp pain, stop and ask. Sina or Mikkel can show you the right height on our rehab floor in a single 45 minute session ($110).
