Many runners ask how many weeks it will be before they can run again after a knee injury. A calendar is a poor guide: some people are ready in weeks and others take months. Testing is a better one.
The usual steps
First walking without a limp, then strength on a single leg, then hopping and short jogging intervals on a flat surface. Each stage is checked by a physiotherapist before the next.
Warning signs
Pain that gets worse during a session, swelling the next morning or a sense that the knee gives way are reasons to pause and ask. We do not promise timelines; recovery differs from person to person.
Sina Talataina runs return-to-run programmes on Monday to Friday; the sports injury assessment ($195) is a good place to start.
