How a reading night runs

The Saturday reading is in the back room, the same room as the second-hand and rare books. Amara Osei has hosted it since 2015. Every Saturday the doors open for the evening at 19:00, and someone reads aloud from 19:30 to 20:30. There are 30 seats. A seat is £5, and the £5 comes off any book bought that evening. The shop itself is open on Saturday from 10:00 until 21:00, so the reading sits inside an ordinary shop day rather than after a locked door. You can buy the seat at the counter or from the Saturday Reading Seat page.

Children’s story hour is the second Saturday of the month, at 11:00, and it is free. Lucía Ferrer hosts it. She has looked after the children’s shelves since 2018. Story hour is in the morning, before the evening reading, and it does not use the £5 seat. Elin Sørensen, who has been here since 2021, looks after Saturdays and the poetry shelves, and she is often the person reading when the night is a poetry night.
