Students and instructors, in their own words

The college asks students and instructors to say what the hour actually feels like. Leila and Noah are students. Tomás and Yuna teach in the skills lab and the simulation ward, Nadia arranges the placement hours, and Dr. Ingrid Solheim, the dean, keeps the day in its order. These are their words.

Who the course admits

Applicants need secondary school completion with biology or a science course. Kango College offers 48 places a year on the Diploma of Nursing, taught across 6 terms, with 1,400 placement hours in the three years. A health check and a background check are completed before the first placement.

The next intake begins on Monday 6 September 2027. Interviews are in April 2027, and offers are sent by Friday 14 May 2027. Graduates may apply to the regional nursing register; registration is decided by the register, not by the college.

What the lab hour asks

The lab hour starts at 10:30, between the bioscience lecture and lunch. You work in the open: a blood-pressure reading, a dressing on a manikin arm, the checks you have already practised at handover. An instructor stands close enough to point, and the skill is not taken out of your hands. If something is wrong, it is named while the hour is still going.

Every lab hour is taught as 6 students to 1 instructor. The group keeps the same skill until it is steady. You are asked to bring your attention and to stay with that one task.
